ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To estimate health care and health-related productivity costs associated with excessive sedentary behaviour (> 8 h/day and > 9 h/day) in Canadian adults. METHODS: Three pieces of information were used to estimate costs: (1) the pooled relative risk estimates of adverse health outcomes consistently shown to be associated with excessive sedentary behaviour, gathered from meta-analyses of prospective cohort studies; (2) the prevalence of excessive sedentary behaviour in Canadian men and women, obtained using waist-worn accelerometry in a nationally representative sample of adults (Canadian Health Measures Survey 2018-2019); and (3) the direct (health care) and indirect (lost productivity due to premature mortality) costs of the adverse health outcomes, selected using the Economic Burden of Illness in Canada 2010 data. The 2010 costs were then adjusted to 2021 costs to account for inflation, population growth, and higher average earnings. A Monte Carlo simulation was conducted to account for uncertainty in the model. RESULTS: The total costs of excessive sedentary behaviour in Canada were $2.2 billion (8 h/day cut-point) and $1.8 billion (9 h/day cut-point) in 2021, representing 1.6% and 1.3% of the overall burden of illness costs, respectively. The two most expensive chronic diseases attributable to excessive sedentary behaviour were cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. A 10% decrease in excessive sedentary behaviour (from 87.7% to 77.7%) would save an estimated $219 million per year in costs. CONCLUSION: Excessive sedentary behaviour significantly contributes to the economic burden of illness in Canada. There is a need for evidence-based and cost-effective strategies that reduce excessive sedentary behaviour in the population.


RéSUMé: OBJECTIF: Estimer le coût des soins de santé et le coût de productivité lié à la santé associés au comportement sédentaire excessif (> 8 heures/jour et > 9 heures/jour) chez les Canadiennes et les Canadiens adultes. MéTHODE: Trois informations ont servi à estimer ces coûts : 1) les estimations combinées du risque relatif des résultats sanitaires indésirables uniformément associés au comportement sédentaire excessif, collectées à partir de méta-analyses d'études prospectives de cohortes; 2) la prévalence du comportement sédentaire excessif chez les Canadiennes et les Canadiens, obtenue à l'aide d'un accéléromètre porté à la taille par un échantillon représentatif national d'adultes (Enquête canadienne sur les mesures de la santé 2018-2019); et 3) les coûts directs (soins de santé) et indirects (perte de productivité due à la mortalité prématurée) des résultats sanitaires indésirables sélectionnés, d'après les données du Fardeau économique de la maladie au Canada de 2010. Les coûts de 2010 ont ensuite été ajustés aux coûts de 2021 pour tenir compte de l'inflation, de la croissance démographique et de la hausse moyenne des revenus. Nous avons effectué une simulation de Monte-Carlo pour tenir compte de l'incertitude du modèle. RéSULTATS: Les coûts totaux du comportement sédentaire excessif au Canada étaient de 2,2 milliards de dollars (point de coupure de 8 heures/jour) et de 1,8 milliard de dollars (point de coupure de 9 heures/jour) en 2021, ce qui représente 1,6 % et 1,3 % du fardeau global des coûts des maladies, respectivement. Les deux maladies chroniques les plus chères imputables au comportement sédentaire excessif étaient les maladies cardiovasculaires et le diabète de type 2. Une baisse de 10 % du comportement sédentaire excessif (de 87,7 % à 77,7 %) économiserait environ 219 millions de dollars de coûts par année. CONCLUSION: Le comportement sédentaire excessif contribue de façon significative au fardeau économique de la maladie au Canada. Il nous faut des stratégies fondées sur les preuves et efficaces par rapport au coût pour réduire le comportement sédentaire excessif dans la population.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in significant changes in every aspect of our lives. Because of the measures imposed, people were only allowed to leave their homes for certain purposes, and all types of cultural and sports events were canceled. Climbers were greatly affected by these limited options for regular physical activity outside of the home environment. Little is known about the crisis' effects on the climbing community in German-speaking regions. Thus, we surveyed 1028 German-speaking climbers (mean age 34.6 years, SD 10.4; 50.4% females) from December 2020 to February 2021. A cross-sectional online survey collected data on climbing frequency and preferences as well as levels of life satisfaction, using the standardized Short Life Satisfaction Questionnaire for Lockdowns (SLSQL) before and during the crisis. Results showed that due to the pandemic, study subjects climbed less frequently, preferred outdoor locations to climb, and showed decreased life satisfaction scores (21%, (d = 0.87, p < 0.001). In conclusion, these findings highlighted that the COVID-19 pandemic had a negative effect on climbing sports activities and life satisfaction in this study sample. To preserve physical and mental health, indoor and outdoor sport activities should be continued as much as possible with reasonable hygiene concepts in place.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: COVID-19 pandemic has made significant changes in life. Sedentary lifestyle, increased usage of gadget, and increased sitting duration could lead to body weight and nutritional status changes. This study aimed to analyze the differences of sitting and screen time with weight changes and body mass index (BMI). Methods:: Online cross-sectional survey performed among 401 individuals older than 18 years in Surabaya. Self-administered questionnaire included questions related to sedentary activities, namely sitting and using gadget duration in a day. Self-reported weight and height before and during pandemic were used to calculate BMI before and during COVID-19 pandemic. Data analysis used the Chi-square test. Results: Study found that 47.9% of respondents did not experience significant changes in their body weight before and during COVID-19 pandemic. People who experienced no change in their body weight spent less than 6 hours sitting (50.8%) and people who experienced weight loss spent more than six hours using their gadgets (59.3%). It also found that 44.6% of respondents had normal nutritional status where 45.3% used gadgets with a duration of more than 6 hours and 45.8% used the time to sit for less than 6 hours. Body weight changes and BMI changes are not significantly different compared to sitting time (p-value=0.692) and screen time (p-value=0.099) during COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: There are no association between screen time and sitting time to body weight and BMI during pandemic COVID-19. © 2022 UPM Press. All rights reserved.

ABSTRACT

(1) Background: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the prevalence of obesity or severe obesity has increased worldwide to the point that it has even been referred to as a new disease. However, the impacts of the pandemic on obesity or severe obesity remain unclear, thus requiring a thorough examination of the leading factors of obesity and severe obesity during this time. (2) Methods: The required dataset for this study was extracted from the eighth (2019-2020) Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHNES). The survey's data for 2019 and 2020 were analyzed to confirm the leading factors of obesity and severe obesity before and after the outbreak of COVID-19. The samples were weighted, and the data were analyzed using multiple logistic regression. (3) Results: In 2020, the prevalence of obesity and severe obesity in the Korean adult population aged 19 and over, compared with the normal weight group, showed significant increases of 2.5% and 1.4%, respectively, compared with those rates in 2019 (p < 0.05). The main variables affecting the obesity prevalence in Korean adults aged 19 and over in 2020 were gender, age, sitting time per day, and walking time per day, and the factors affecting severe obesity were gender and age. Meanwhile, the daily energy intake variable had no impact on the prevalence of obesity and severe obesity. (4) Conclusions: These findings will serve as a basis to help the present management directions and treatment approaches for individuals with obesity or severe obesity in the post-COVID-19 era.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To compare physical activity (PA), sitting time, and substance use pre-COVID-19 and during COVID-19 pandemic among US college students. Participants: 484 students from a large Western university (20.6 ± 1.4 years, 80.0% female) were recruited. Methods: Self-reported online surveys were completed in June-August 2020. T-tests and non-parametric analyses were conducted for continuous and ordinal variables respectively. Results: Vigorous PA, moderate PA, and light PA decreased significantly by 32%, 27%, and 21% and sitting time increased significantly by 49% from pre-COVID-19 to during COVID-19 pandemic. Wine consumption was less during COVID-19 than pre-COVID-19 among female, non-first-generation, and White students. Sleep aids use was more frequent during COVID-19 than pre-COVID-19 pandemic among non-first-generation and White students. Conclusion: COVID-19 pandemic may influence college students' health behaviors including physical activity patterns, sitting time, and substance use. Effective health promotion and coping strategies should be widely available to college students during times of change and uncertainty.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: While physical inactivity or prolonged sitting has been linked to an increased risk of frailty, the interaction between sitting time (ST), physical activity (PA) and frailty is not well understood. The aim of this study was to examine the dose-response relationship between PA, ST and frailty and further to evaluate the interaction effect of PA and ST on frailty in the context of regular COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was performed on 1458 participants (age ≥ 60) enrolled from a prospective cohort study of frailty in elderly people of Fujian Province. PA and ST levels were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. A 40-item frailty index (FI) quantified frailty. Multivariable logistic regression and linear regression models were applied to examine the dose-response relationship between PA or ST and frailty level. Interaction plots were used to visualise the interaction effects of PA and ST on frailty. RESULTS: Compared with light PA, the odds ratios (ORs) for frailty were significantly lower for moderate PA (OR, 0.609 [95% CI, 0.419, 0.885], P < .001) and vigorous PA (OR, 0.399 [95% CI, 0.236,0.673], P < .001). Comparing subjects with ST <  4 h/day, those with ST ≥ 8 h/day were significantly more likely to be diagnosed with frailty (OR, 3.140 [95% CI, 1.932, 5.106], P < .001), 6-8 h/day (OR, 1.289 [95% CI, 0.835, 1.989], P >0.05), and 4-6 h/day (OR, 1.400 [95% CI, 0.972, 2.018], P >0.05). Each one unit increase in metabolic equivalents (h/day) of PA was related to an average 0.928 (0.887, 0.971) decrease in prevalence of frailty, while each one unit increase in sitting time (h/day) was related to average 1.114 (1.046,1.185) increase in prevalence of frailty. Negative interactive effects of PA and ST on frailty were observed (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: There are nonlinear and linear dose-response relationships between PA, SB and frailty respectively. In addition, excess ST may counteract the beneficial effects of PA on frailty. Interventions that focus on reducing excess ST may be effective strategies to reduce the risk of frailty and should be taken seriously by public health authorities, especially in the context of regular epidemic prevention and control in China.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has adversely affected social contact and physical activity. This study investigated the correlation between physical activity, social contact, and sedentary time among adults aged 65 years and above during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This study was conducted in N City, H Prefecture, Japan. The authors randomly selected 4,996 adults, aged 65 years and above (mean age 74.1 ± 6.1 years), living in N City, and survey forms were distributed by mail in mid-August 2020. Altogether, 1,925 participants were included in this study. The survey comprised questions concerning the participants' sex, height, weight, age, smoking and drinking habits, living arrangements, social contact assessments, physical activity levels, and sedentary time. Moreover, linear regression analysis was utilized to investigate the associations between the variables. RESULTS: The reported median physical activity was 1272 metabolic equivalent of task-min/week (interquartile range 528-2628), and the reported median sedentary time was 360 min/week (interquartile range 240-600). COVID-19 "somewhat," "quite a lot," or "completely" hindered the frequency of in-person contact with friends among 75.5% of the respondents and hampered the frequency of virtual contact with friends among 38.8% of the respondents. Physical activity was associated significantly with in-person contact indicators: "interaction with friends" (B = -0.111; 95%CI: -0.187, -0.035; p = 0.004) and "social participation" (B = -0.163; 95%CI: -0.248, -0.079; p < 0.001). These associations remained significant for both multivariate analysis Models 1 (sex and age) and 2 (addition of body mass index [BMI], alcohol use, smoking, living alone, and the number of illnesses to Model 1). Additionally, sedentary time was significantly associated with the social contact variable of "interaction with friends" (B = 0.04; 95%CI: 0.016, 0.064; p = 0.001). This association remained significant in both multivariate analysis models. CONCLUSIONS: Significant associations were confirmed between reduced social contact, decreased physical activity, and more sedentary behavior among older adults due to COVID-19. Hence, continuous monitoring and support for social activities among susceptible older adults in extraordinary circumstances are essential.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of perceived stress [PS] with physical activity [PA] and sitting time [ST], before and during COVID-19 among US college students. Participants: 592 students from a large Western university (19.08 ± 4.62 years, 76.69% female, 79.39% White) were recruited. Methods: Self-reported online survey was completed in June-December 2020. Analysis included paired T-tests for continuous variables, Pearson Correlation the relationship between PSS, PA, and sitting time before and during COVID-19, and linear mixed models examined the association of outcome variables with PSS, time, and PSS × time. Results. Vigorous, moderate, and light PA decreased by 40%, 35% and 19%, sitting time increased by 52%, and PSS increase by 42% from before to during COVID-19. Conclusions: The perceived stress during COVID-19 may have influenced physical activity and sitting time. Effective health promotion programs and coping strategies are needed to protect college students as campuses reopen during COVID.

Older adults have higher sedentary behavior (SB), lower physical activity, and are particularly susceptible to negative impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic and associated public health restrictions. Pandemic impacts to SB and health, particularly via objective assessment, are not well documented in the literature. Here we described differences in SB, physical activity, and blood pressure (BP) for older adults before and during the pandemic. Baseline thigh-worn activPAL accelerometer and BP measurements from 95 participants enrolled in a SB intervention trial pre-pandemic were compared to 60 enrolled post-pandemic. We used linear regression models adjusted for demographic and health factors to estimate differences in sample means of SB measures and BP. The post-COVID sample was older (age 67 vs. 70), more female (60% vs. 72%), and included more individuals of color (21% vs. 32%). In fully adjusted models, systolic BP was statistically significantly higher in the post-COVID group (6.8, 95% CI: [0.3,13.3]). After adjustment, activPAL-measured and self-reported activity were non-significant but trended towards greater total sitting (0.4 hours [-0.3, 1.1]), fewer daily steps (-270 [-1078, 538]), and greater self-reported TV time (0.4 hours, [-0.3, 1.1]) post-COVID. Future analyses are warranted to better quantify these impacts and guide clinical care and future interventions.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the lives of people of all nations. This study examined physical activity (PA) behavior, barriers and facilitators to PA during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study assessed adults using a survey comprised of two parts: (a) demographics and general health and; (b) PA-related questions. The survey link was disseminated via email and various social media, and was active from September to October 2020. Results: A total of 277 adults (Mean ± SD; age = 32.6 ± 13.6 years, BMI = 27.1 ± 16.5 kg/m2) were evaluated. A majority of the sample was female (67%), single (53%) and White (70%). About a third of the participants reported good mental and physical health, with a similar amount reporting weight gain during the pandemic. Participants further reported on average 271 min of PA/week, and 5.7 h/day of sitting time. Overall, 41.5% of the participants reported a decrease in PA during the COVID-19 pandemic, but those not meeting PA recommendations reported higher rates (67.9%) of decrease in levels of PA than their active counterparts (23.6%); x 2 (2, N = 277) = 55.757, p < 0.01. Over 50% of the participants reported engaging in PA at home, with significantly more females (43.5%) than males (17.6%) making use of live stream PA/exercise session opportunities; x 2 (2, N = 277) = 18.896, p < 0.001. "Closed gyms" and "more time" were reported as the main negative and positive factors, respectively, affecting PA during the pandemic. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that PA behavior was negatively affected in US adults during the COVID-19 pandemic, and that "closed gym" (i.e., barrier), and "more time" (i.e., facilitator), were the main factors reported affecting PA participation. Given the well-known public health importance of PA, it is paramount that public health initiatives focus on providing not only educational but also environmental opportunities and support for PA during this period.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically impacted human lifestyles across the world. Lockdowns and home confinement decreased prior opportunities for everyday physical activity. To retrospectively assess how the Austrian population coped with these aspects of the crisis, we conducted a cross-sectional online survey from March to September 2021 using a structured questionnaire in German. In total, 1214 participants (56.9% females, mean age 37.0 years) living across Austria shared self-reported information on sociodemographic characteristics, indoor and outdoor physical activity, reasons for being outdoors, and life satisfaction before and after the emergence of the virus. As a result, overall indoor physical activity significantly decreased in a before-during COVID-19 crisis comparison, although exercising at home with online instructions increased by about 63%. Exercising outdoors increased overall, specifically in periurban forests and rural areas, both by about 9%. Life satisfaction decreased significantly by 19.7% (p < 0.001). Outdoor public places and natural environments gained importance due to restrictions affecting access to sport facilities. Further research is needed to evaluate benefits and therapeutic values of outdoor nature for physical and mental health in times of a global pandemic to maintain resilient societies, as it might impact future active living and life satisfaction.

ABSTRACT

The association of physical activity (PA) or sedentary behaviour (SB) with mental health in remotely working software professionals remains unclear. We administered a secondary analysis of physical health variables (PA and SB time during work and non-work days) and mental health variables (stress, anxiety, depression) from a primary study. Ninety-five per cent of the participants (n = 76) did not meet the global PA recommendations. Our study found daily PA time to be negatively associated with stress (ß = -1.57; p = 0.02), anxiety (ß = -1.01; p = 0.04) and depression (ß = -0.68; p = 0.47). Furthermore, the average daily sitting time during the work day was found to be positively associated with stress (ß = 0.28; p = 0.00), anxiety (ß = 0.01; p = 0.04) and depression (ß = -0.68; p = 0.03). Organizational policies should advocate the implementation of PA or SB strategies for improving mental health in remote workers.Trial registrationClinical Trials Registry India identifier CTRI/2021/03/032146.

This study aimed to determine the effect of the first English national COVID-19 lockdown on physical activity (PA), sitting time, eating behaviours and body mass in an adult cohort. This was further examined to determine whether conforming to recommended guidelines on PA and sedentary behaviour was improved. Based on an online survey (n = 818) incorporating the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF), self-reported body mass change showed that in 32.2% of participants body mass increased, with 39.1% reporting an increase in food intake. Never exercising at the gym or undertaking an exercise class (online or live), increased by 50.8% during lockdown, with 53.5% changing from exercising frequently to never exercising, suggesting a lack of engagement with online and home workouts. However, outdoor running and cycling >2 times/week increased by 38% during lockdown. Walking at least 30 min continuously on >2 occasions/week increased by 70% during lockdown with minimum 10-min walks on 7 days per week increasing by 23%. The lockdown had a negative impact on sitting time (>8 h a day), which increased by 43.6% on weekdays and 121% at weekends. Furthermore, sitting <4 h/day decreased during lockdown (46.5% and 25.6% for weekdays and weekends, respectively). Those citing tiredness or lack of time as a barrier to exercise reduced by 16% and 60%, respectively, from pre-lockdown to during lockdown. More of the sedentary group met the Public Health England PA recommendations, however most participants still did not meet the UK Government guidelines for PA. Improvements in health per additional minutes of physical activity will be proportionately greater in those previously doing <30 min/week, the area where most improvements were found although, conversely sitting time was greatly increased. This study may assist in informing whether future lifestyle changes could improve the health of the population.

ABSTRACT

Measures implemented to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2 have resulted in a decrease in physical activity (PA) while sedentary behaviour increased. The aim of the present study was to explore associations between PA and mental health in Austria during COVID-19 social restrictions. In this web-based cross-sectional study (April-May 2020) moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), sitting time, and time spent outdoors were self-reported before and during self-isolation. Mental well-being was assessed with the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale, and the Beck depression and anxiety inventories. The majority of the participants (n = 652) were female (72.4%), with a mean age of 36.0 years and a standard deviation (SD) of 14.4. Moreover, 76.5% took part in ≥30 min/day of MVPA, 53.5% sat ≥10 h/day, and 66.1% spent ≥60 min/day outdoors during self-isolation. Thirty-eight point five percent reported high mental well-being, 40.5% reported depressive symptoms, and 33.9% anxiety symptoms. Participating in higher levels of MVPA was associated with higher mental well-being (odds ratio = OR: 3.92; 95% confidence interval = 95%CI: 1.51-10.15), less depressive symptoms (OR: 0.44; 95%CI: 0.29-0.66) and anxiety symptoms (OR = 0.62; 95%CI: 0.41-0.94), and less loneliness (OR: 0.46; 95%CI: 0.31-0.69). Participants sitting <10 h/day had higher odds of mental well-being (OR: 3.58; 95%CI: 1.13-11.35). Comparable results were found for spending ≥60 min/day outdoors. Maintaining one's MVPA levels was associated with higher mental well-being (OR = 8.61, 95%CI: 2.68-27.62). In conclusion, results show a positive association between PA, time spent outdoors and mental well-being during COVID-19 social restrictions. Interventions aiming to increase PA might mitigate negative effects of such restrictions.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak and the resulting state of emergency have restricted work environments, which may contribute to increased duration of sedentary behaviors. This study investigated the self-reported sedentary time of Japanese workers during and after the first state of emergency (April 7 to May 25, 2020) and examined differences in sedentary time after starting work from home and according to job type. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data from the Japan COVID-19 and Society Internet Survey, a web-based questionnaire survey conducted from August to September 2020 (n = 11,623; age range 15-79 years; 63.6% male). Prolonged sedentary time was calculated by subtracting the sedentary time after the state of emergency (defined as the normal sedentary time) from that during the emergency, with adjustments using inverse probability weighting for being a respondent in an internet survey. RESULTS: An increase in sedentary time of at least 2 hours was reported by 12.8% of respondents who started working from home during the state of emergency, including 9.7% of salespersons and 7.7% of desk workers. After adjusting for potential confounders, the multivariate-adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for a prolonged sedentary time ≥2 hours was significantly higher in respondents who started to work from home (OR: 2.14, 95% confidence interval: 1.78-2.57), and certain job types (desk workers; OR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.27-1.91, salespersons; OR: 2.03, 95% CI: 1.64-2.51). CONCLUSIONS: Working from home and non-physical work environments might be important predictors of prolonged sedentary time.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Sedentary behaviors and physical activity are likely to be affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, and sedentary lifestyles can increase subjective fatigue. The nonpharmaceutical policies imposed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic may also have adverse effects on fatigue. OBJECTIVE: This study has two aims: to examine the changes in sedentary behaviors and physical activity of company workers in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Japan and to examine relationships between changes in these sedentary behaviors and physical activity and changes in fatigue. METHODS: Data from a nationwide prospective online survey conducted in 2019 and 2020 were used. On February 22, 2019, an email with a link to participate in the study was sent to 45,659 workers, aged 20 to 59 years, who were randomly selected from a database of approximately 1 million individuals. A total of 2466 and 1318 participants, who self-reported their occupation as company workers, answered the baseline and follow-up surveys, respectively. Surveys captured fatigue, workday and daily domain-specific sedentary behaviors and physical activity, and total sedentary behaviors and physical activity. We used multivariable linear regression models to estimate associations of changes in sedentary behaviors and physical activity with changes in fatigue. RESULTS: Increases in public transportation sitting during workdays, other leisure sitting time during workdays, and other leisure sitting time were associated with an increase in the motivation aspect of fatigue (b=0.29, 95% CI 0-0.57, P=.048; b=0.40, 95% CI 0.18-0.62, P<.001; and b=0.26, 95% CI 0.07-0.45, P=.007, respectively). Increases in work-related sitting time during workdays, total sitting time during workdays, and total work-related sitting time were significantly associated with an increase in the physical activity aspect of fatigue (b=0.06, 95% CI 0-0.12, P=.03; b=0.05, 95% CI 0.01-0.09, P=.02; and b=0.07, 95% CI 0-0.14, P=.04, respectively). The motivation and physical activity aspects of fatigue increased by 0.06 for each 1-hour increase in total sitting time between baseline and follow-up (b=0.06, 95% CI 0-0.11, P=.045; and b=0.06, 95% CI 0.01-0.10, P=.009, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings demonstrated that sedentary and active behaviors among company workers in Japan were negatively affected during the COVID-19 outbreak. Increases in several domain-specific sedentary behaviors also contributed to unfavorable changes in workers' fatigue. Social distancing and teleworking amid a pandemic may contribute to the sedentary lifestyle of company workers. Public health interventions are needed to mitigate the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic or future pandemics on sedentary and physical activity behaviors and fatigue among company workers.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) may be affecting the physical activity (PA) level in much of the population. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of physical inactivity and sedentary behavior (SB) among adults with chronic diseases and their associations with sociodemographic factors during the COVID-19 pandemic. This cross-sectional study included 249 participants (age: 18-91 years; 61.4% female) with chronic conditions and attended the Family Health Strategy program in a small town in Brazil. Data were collected between 2020-07-13 and 2020-07-24 by face-to-face interviews. Self-reported PA, sitting time, chronic diseases, medication use, sociodemographic data, and self-isolation adherence were obtained by questionnaire. During this specific time point of the COVID-19 pandemic, 71.5% of participants did not meet the PA recommendations (≥500 METs-min/week), and the prevalence of SB risk (≥4 h sitting) was 62.7%. Adjusted logistic regression indicated that male participants (odds ratio [OR]: 1.89 [95% CI 1.02-3.53]), living alone (OR: 2.92 [95% CI 1.03-8.30]) or in a two-person household (OR: 2.32 [95% CI 1.16-4.63]), and those who reported sometimes performing self-isolation (OR: 3.07 [95% CI 1.47-6.40]) were more likely to meet the minimum PA recommendations. Current smokers had a lower odds (OR: 0.36 [95% CI 0.14-0.95]) of meeting the PA recommendations. Older participants (OR: 2.18 [95% CI 1.06-4.50]) and those who had multimorbidity (OR: 1.92 [95% CI 1.07-3.44]) were more likely to have a higher degree of SB. There is an urgent need to mitigate physical inactivity and SB, and public health interventions must take into account sociodemographic status.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic altered many facets of life. We aimed to evaluate the impact of COVID-19-related public health guidelines on physical activity (PA), sedentary behavior, mental health, and their interrelations. Cross-sectional data were collected from 3052 US adults 3-8 April 2020 (from all 50 states). Participants self-reported pre- and post-COVID-19 levels of moderate and vigorous PA, sitting, and screen time. Currently-followed public health guidelines, stress, loneliness, positive mental health (PMH), social connectedness, and depressive and anxiety symptoms were self-reported. Participants were grouped by meeting US PA guidelines, reporting ≥8 h/day of sitting, or ≥8 h/day of screen time, pre- and post-COVID-19. Overall, 62% of participants were female, with age ranging from 18-24 (16.6% of sample) to 75+ (9.3%). Self-reported PA was lower post-COVID among participants reporting being previously active (mean change: -32.3% [95% CI: -36.3%, -28.1%]) but largely unchanged among previously inactive participants (+2.3% [-3.5%, +8.1%]). No longer meeting PA guidelines and increased screen time were associated with worse depression, loneliness, stress, and PMH (p < 0.001). Self-isolation/quarantine was associated with higher depressive and anxiety symptoms compared to social distancing (p < 0.001). Maintaining and enhancing physical activity participation and limiting screen time increases during abrupt societal changes may mitigate the mental health consequences.
